I've been working with Angie at Crary Industries in West Fargo on a series of marketing pieces they needed done in a very short amount of time for a chipper/shredder promotion they have going on. She sent me the catalog she had recently designed so I could get the feel for the look she was going for, along with images and fonts and logos she wanted included. I completed a postcard, a web ad, a hang tag, a newspaper ad (color and black and white) and a stuffer statement (two sided). The image above is the overall design for all the pieces.

Steele County Renaissance Zone Brochure

I worked with Courtnie at Steele County in Finley ND on designing a brochure highlighting their Renaissance Zone. They supplied me with all the copy and images and had a general layout in mind but left the creative up to me. They are pleased with the end result with very few revisions.

Christmas Program - HOPE Church

Hope Church contacted me to come up with a poster for their Christmas Program. The play is a modern day version of Mary and Joseph being turned away at the Inn and having to go to the stable. For the poster, they wanted an image of a run down Lucky Star Inn with a petting zoo scene right next door. I have to admit, this project has been my most challenging to date. I ended up taking about 5 different images and collaging them all together to come up with the scene. They are very happy with the result. Again, I did two different sizes, an image for their overhead projector shown during the services and an advertisement for the website.

Church Service Poster - HOPE Church

Hope Church in Grand Forks contacted me to come up with a poster to advertise their new Sunday evening contemporary service geared toward the younger generation. I worked with Pastor Brad Johnson who had very specific ideas in mind. We went through quite a few revisions until finally ending up with exactly what he had envisioned. If you look closely you will see the tree trunk is 'the cross'. I ended up doing two different sizes of the poster and with different color schemes. I also did an image for their overhead projector shown in their church services and also an advertisement for the website.

Tailgating Banner - HOPE Church

Hope Church in Grand Forks had a tailgating event held on September 11th. I created a 4 foot banner for the event as well as an image for the overhead projector shown during the service and also a web advertisement that went on the website.

Finley, ND Brochure

I am again working with Suzanne Halvorson, Economic Development Coordinator from Finley on a new brochure for the city to bring in new families and businesses. She and I are both really excited about this new design. It's probably my favorite piece as of late. She really wanted to draw the reader in and the way to do that is with photos, 17 to be exact! Which is alot of photos, but I think the layout I chose creates a nice balance of photos and information. It doesnt appear to be too congested.

Driving Nails Poster

I designed this poster last year as well (you can see it by clicking on the older posts at the bottom of the page). They approached me this year with a totally different idea. A cemetery scene - I did two versions, one was more like a drawing (which is the one they chose) and the other was very abstract (the yellow and brown version). They also needed a postcard done, an ad done for their overhead projector shown during church services and an ad for their website which is currently running for a few more weeks at http://www.gfhope.org/.

Ihry Insurance Folder

Ihry Insurance in Grand Forks needed a folder designed for handing out materials to their clients. They had ideas of what images they wanted to represent. I'm very happy with how it turned out. It's very colorful, especially the inside, it has a panoramic feel and the side flap that opens with the additional information is a very creative way to add more information without disrupting the photo.

Wow I cant believe it has been 9 months since my last post. I have been busy moving to a new town and all the fun that goes along with that! But I still have been keeping up with my design. I've attached a few of the projects I did the last part of 2010 for your viewing enjoyment. The first is a two-fold brochure for the business center in Hannaford, ND. The second is a wall calendar for North Dakota Mill. I designed the top header for it. And the last is a series of advertisements I designed for an embroidery business in Grand Forks. I took all the photos of the clothing as well and just changed out the backgrounds to create different looks for the specific events they were advertising for.

Nelson Business Forms Website

Well in the month of June I did a few small jobs for Randy at Nelson Business Forms - a proposal form for Sterling Carpet One and some logo edits for TOOP but the major project that I finished for him was their new look for the website. Check it out - www.nelsonbusinessforms.com He already had a concept that he was looking for so I just went with it- it matches the business card that I designed for them a few months back. We had a few tweeks but for the most part it is exactly like the layout that he was envisioning.

Johnson Construction Business Card

This weekend I came up with a business card for a family owned carpentry business. I came up with something very simple but yet effective with the hammer pounding in the nails as the centerpoint of the card. I thought it would add a neat touch to give the back of the card the "scattered nails" appearance.

EAPC Logo and Invite

I have been working with Lori Bakken, Marketing Director at EAPC on an anniversary project for the company. They are celebrating their 10th year in business and she wanted me to come up with a logo symbolizing that milestone. She wanted something very simple, tradition and would look good alongside their current logo. Also, something that would look good in a smaller version as it will be going on a tape measure given out to people and a cake that will be presented at the open house celebration. I also did a 5x7 invitation postcard that will be printed front and back.

Oscar Zero Logo

Mary from Boutiques on Burrel in Cooperstown, ND contacted me about designing some logo ideas for a new tourist attraction in the Cooperstown area called Oscar Zero. It is an old missile site that people can walk through and tour. As a business woman in the area, Mary wants to sell souvenirs in honor of the site at her local store. She wasnt quite sure what she wanted, so I played around with missiles and colors and I have included the logo she chose. We are now working on a second version with "Cooperstown, ND" added. Stay tuned...

Smiley Playground Plaque

Again in March I had the privilege to work with Katie Osborn from Urban Development and the Northside Neighborhood committee on developing another fun plaque that will be placed at a playground. It will be named in honor of our beloved Smiley water tower that was taken down this past year so it's very much in remembrance of him. In the background, I included an illustrative drawing (watermark) of kids playing on playground equipment and added Smiley in like he's watching over the playground and the kids. We also added a few different poses of Smiley showing off his big grin. I cant wait until it is put up this Spring. I will add a picture of the actual thing soon!

Nelson Business Forms Business Cards

Back in March I worked with Randy and Brad from Nelson Business Forms to come up with a business card for their business. The goal was to try and showcase their full color printing services. They wanted some sort of an image in the background to showcase that. I played around with CMYK paint daubs to look like they were falling onto the card but it just didn't have quite the look they were wanting. We ended up with a very subtle textured look that is interesting and inviting yet not too distracting.

Rotary International Conference Logo

I came up with a logo to represent a conference that the Rotary Club in Grand Forks is putting on in 2011. They wanted the slogan "May the Forks be with you" to be represented by an image of the Red River 'forking' off. From this logo I did, they are making pins, bags and shirts with the logo embroidered on them.

Hannaford Wellness Center Brochure

Jill and Susan from the Economic Development office in Hannaford sent me information for a brochure to highlight the towns wellness center. The brochure ended up being very image heavy due to the fact that there wasnt much information to be included. I tried making it very bright and vibrant to represent the energetic feeling of a fitness center. We are still in the editing phases on this brochure as I suggested to the client that they should do a welcome paragraph or description of the fitness center on the inside flap where I have included "lorum ipsum" copy.

CAB Park Brochure

Again I have been working with Jill from the City of Hannaford on a brochure for the city's campground called Cab Park. She didn't have much information so we decided to do just a one panel two sided handout. I decided to do more of an illustrative background because I didn't have any high resolution images to work with. So the images I did have I placed in frames on the front to highlight them.

Hope Church Driving Nails Poster

I've been working with Ken and Mollie from Hope Church on a poster to advertise a play they do every year around Easter. They wanted to keep the theme the same as in previous years, with a dark background and a bold font to grab attention. This year they wanted the image of two hands one being "God's" hand with a scar and the other hand representing someone in need.

I usually give at least three but if more ideas come to me I will include as many as I can. She wanted to include their new logo, slogan and of course her name, title and contact information along with their color scheme. The one she chose is the top left. Brochure for Hannaford, ND

The brochure I did for Hannaford, ND focused on the agriculture of the community. Jill wanted to show the many different crops grown so for the backgrounds I used corn, beans, sunflowers, and wheat along with smaller photos highlighting some attractions of the town. The back flap talks about the history of the community and the cover shows off their new logo and slogan.

Sharon Lutheran Church Logo

A few weeks ago, I was asked to submit a few ideas for a new logo to the Sharon Lutheran Church communications committee. The information they gave me was they wanted the cross to look exactly like their architectual wood cross on the outside of the building and they wanted the four different colors (representing the seasons) incorporated somehow. I would say 3-5 examples would suffice but once I start I guess I just cant stop, I submitted 9. I like to throw a couple of my own ideas in there to show clients I can think outside of the box as well, give them a different way to look at it - and who knows, they may see they like it better. Those two examples would be the bottom two, very young and contemporary feel - definitely geared to the younger christian followers. The committee has chosen to go with the top right logo with some font and color changes. I will repost the edited version once we get to the next phase of the very long 'logo' process.

Other Creative Outlets...

Back in September I thought it would be fun to take a cake decorating class since I am totally addicted to all the cake shows on tv. The classes are offered at Michael's and they last 2 hrs once a week for a month at a time. There are four different courses you can take at very reasonable prices! The first course is a basic course where you learn how to layer cakes, frost them, use all the tips and make buttercream roses. The second course (which I'm in right now) is learning how to make fondant, putting it on the cake, making fondant decorations and also learning how to make tiered cakes. I can't even tell you how much fun I am having and I am very surprised at how easy it really is (although time consuming thats for sure). It is very relaxing and gives me another outlet to let out all my creative energy!

East Central Tourism Brochure

It's been awhile since my last post so I will be posting a few things today. In September I started working with the Economic Development Coordinator from Steele County (again) on a brochure to highlight tourist attractions within Griggs and Steele counties in North Dakota. With the last couple projects I've worked on for her, she has given me the freedom to come up with my own ideas and I just love that. I really like the 'rustic' look and thought it would translate well in a tourism brochure highlighting museums and churches etc. The board liked my idea and the only changes I've had to make are text changes. This project hasnt gone to print yet but I don't anticipate any further changes. They are happy with the outcome and I'd have to say it's one of my personal favorites to date!

I have been working with Eileen Zygerlicke on putting together the monthly newsletter for Hope Covenant Evangelical Church. They were in need of a graphic designer to help them out and I was happy to volunteer my services. She sent me seven articles along with a variety of photos to choose from and was given around a week to finish the project. We have had a series of corrections but it will soon be off to the printer. They were looking to change the look of the newsletter, one that reflects their new and improved website. They are pleased with how it turned out. I will be doing this newsletter every month.

Logo Design

For the last three months I've been working on a logo design for Magic Valley Symphony in Idaho. Initially I sent them 10 designs that I came up with so they had alot of options to choose from. Three of the members narrowed it down to one specific look they liked. During the process, many things have been altered: fonts have been changed, text was added and pieces were removed so this is much different than the first draft. They liked the idea of a treble clef intertwining in the letters but after many revisions the result ended up being a baton and 'swoosh' in the background making up the treble clef laying on it's side.

Race Car Shirt Design

I designed a tshirt decal for Todd Johnson's race car team. When deciding on the design I took into account the bright orange, green and purple colors that are on the car itself and decided to incorporate that into the decal design as well. In addition, the driver had specific instructions that he wanted both sides of the car in view in order to show off all of his sponsors. Overall, I think it's a great representation of the car and the race care drivers personality.

New Website Designs

I've delved into the world of web design. I'm earning a certificate in web technologies from an online organization! I started in May with Intro. to HTML, Intro. to CSS, and Dreamweaver. They are wrapping up this week so I'm busy working on final projects now. Next I will be taking Javascript and Advanced HTML with Advanced CSS, Flash and Intro. to XML to follow later on in a few months. I'm very pleased with what I'm learning take a look at a few of my sites... strawberrypatch and racecar.

Steele County Brochure

In June I worked on a brochure highlighting Hope, ND, for Steele County Economic Development located in Finley, ND. This project had a two day turn around and I jumped at the opportunity. There were around 4 revisions from my contact before she took it to the board to get approved. I actually did two different versions, one with sunflowers in the background and one with corn. The board liked them both so much that they decided to get 500 of each printed. After I had sent the files to the printer, my contact noticed a few more things she wanted to add and I was happy to do it, although I would have to resend the files again so they would print with the new additions. I made sure to contact the printer rep to make sure they received the new file and double-checked that they would use the correct version. I am very happy with the outcome and I know the client is too.

Near Northside Neighborhood Historical Plaque

Back in May I had the opportunity to work with Katie Osborn from the Office of Urban Development on a historical plaque for the 'Near Northside Neighborhood' committee. They had a specific idea in mind of what they wanted and they also needed it done in a short amount of time. I was able to put everything else aside in order to get the project done within a couple of days for them. We only went through a couple revisions and within a week I had it sent to the printer in Pennsylvania. Everything went off without a hitch and overall everyone was very pleased with the result. The plaque arrived in June and they were able to get it up the first week of July. It is located near the entrance of the Greenway off of 3rd Street N. and 7th Avenue.
